What Happens If You Cannot Sleep During A Sleep Study?

At Dr. Avi Ishaaya Centers in Beverly Hills, CA, we conduct sleep studies that help our board-certified physician, Dr. Avi Ishaaya, diagnose a sleep disorder. He has successfully treated sleep disorders for over 20 years at his Beverly Hills, CA office. Our staff is committed to offering our patients a life without trouble sleeping from sleep apnea, loud snoring, night terrors, insomnia, or narcolepsy.

During a consultation (at our center or during an online consultation), you can learn what is causing your sleep disorder, which helps us create a custom treatment plan that focuses on improving your health. If you qualify for a sleep study, we will give you a prescription. We will also discuss what happens during a sleep study in Beverly Hills, CA.

About our sleep lab

In 2004, Dr. Ishaaya, a sleep study doctor, founded the Midway Sleep Lab, a state-of-the-art sleep center in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles. This facility can accommodate many different sleep studies. Our lab is fully accredited with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and offers a comfortable place for sleep studies that monitor the brain, heart, and lungs. During a sleep study, we will explain the technology we are using to perform your test.

What does a sleep study show?

A sleep study helps us diagnose various sleep disorders, including:

  • Insomnia

  • Narcolepsy

  • Periodic limb movement disorder

  • REM sleep behavior disorder

  • Restless legs syndrome

  • Sleep apnea

If you’re diagnosed with a sleep disorder in Beverly Hills, CA, we offer treatments to help you restore your sleep and your overall health.

Types of sleep studies offered

At Dr. Avi Ishaaya Centers in Beverly Hills, CA, we offer daytime and overnight sleep studies at home or in our sleep lab. These sleep studies include:

  1. Bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) titration study: This test is used for patients who may respond better to different pressure strengths than a CPAP machine can give. This is an overnight sleep study that uses a BiPAP device pressure to test different patterns of breathing.

  2. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) study: For patients with sleep apnea symptoms, we recommend this overnight CPAP sleep study. It tests how well the CPAP machine delivers a singular pressure level to help us determine the best possible treatment.

  3. Maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT): This daytime study will evaluate daytime sleepiness, alertness, and how long a patient remains awake during a certain time period.

  4. Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT): For patients with daytime sleepiness, this test determines how fast a patient falls asleep and when they enter a REM sleep stage, if they ever do. This is recommended for patients who show symptoms of narcolepsy.

  5. Polysomnogram (PSG): This overnight sleep study measures brain waves, heart rhythm, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, movement, breathing, and any disruptive behavior that may affect sleep.

All of these sleep studies are almost always covered by most insurance companies, including Medicare. We will review your financial obligations with you before you have a sleep study in Beverly Hills, CA. Depending on your particular health and symptoms, we may recommend an overnight, in-lab test as opposed to an at-home test.

How to prepare for a sleep study

Never have caffeine in the afternoon or evening of an overnight sleep study. Also, avoid alcohol as these substances can all affect your sleep. Before going to the sleep center, wash your hair with shampoo only. Dry your hair, and don’t apply any gels, oils, or hair sprays, as they can affect the sensors that we use during your sleep study. Bring comfortable pajamas and a change of clothes for the morning. You may also want to bring your own pillow. Ultimately, whatever will make you most comfortable is ideal.

What happens if I can’t sleep during my sleep study?

Oftentimes, if a patient cannot sleep, we will allow them to take melatonin or even Benadryl. All we need is a few hours of sleep data to make a proper diagnosis, so don’t stress if you didn’t get a full night of sleep. Dr. Ishaaya can review your information to determine whether you have a sleep disorder and, from there, can determine the best treatment.
