What is an x-ray?

Getting an x-ray as a preventive measure is like having a snapshot of the area you can use to compare when problems do arise. At Dr. Avi Ishaaya Centers in Los Angeles, CA, we have diagnostic x-ray services for our patients on-site. An x-ray allows your medical team to take a closer look at the tissues, organs, and bones in your body without making an incision. Having a diagnostic x-ray on your medical record as a reference point is never a bad idea. When you need it most, you will have valuable information from the x-ray to compare your past and current images. For example, if you have a chest x-ray without symptoms during an annual exam, you will have a record of what your lungs looked like before. If you come in for a cough that won't go away, then you will have a before picture to have a better perspective on your lung health. Schedule an appointment with our board-certified physician in pulmonary, internal, sleep, and geriatric medicine, Dr. Abraham "Avi" Ishaaya, to discover your options in imaging with our in-house x-ray technology.

Who can have an X-RAY?

Adults and children can both have x-rays at our office. However, it is best for children to have limited exposure to the radiation from an x-ray. Dr. Ishaaya believes that children should only have an x-ray when medically necessary. He will only request an x-ray for a child when there are no other alternatives to diagnose a condition.

Here are some of the ways Dr. Ishaaya can use the x-ray. He can look for:

  • Bone weakness
  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis
  • Infection
  • Lung, heart, digestive health concerns
  • Circulatory issues (blood clots)
  • Tumors or cancerous masses

During x-rays

Our x-ray technicians are highly trained and certified to perform the imaging services, and will provide you with the least amount of exposure and only take the images needed. Step-by-step, our technician will walk you through the process depending on what area of your body you need to have the x-ray. In a matter of seconds, the image will be recorded.

After Your In-House x-ray

We will have a radiologist review your x-rays within a few days (depending on when you have the x-ray done) and discuss the findings with Dr. Ishaaya. We will then contact you with the results. Dr. Ishaaya may find something on an x-ray that he does not treat. If this happens, he will refer you to a local physician or specialist who can address your newly diagnosed medical condition.

X-rays FAQ

Are x-rays harmful?
All types of ionizing radiation can be harmful to the human body and a possible cancer risk, but the amount of radiation you receive in a diagnostic -ray scan is minimal, therefore making the risk small. One chest x-ray is about the same as a few days of normal background radiation you receive while outside. According to the American College of Radiology, you should limit your lifetime exposure to 100 mSv, which is about 10,000 chest x-rays.

Do x-rays hurt?

No, not at all. You won't feel anything at all during the quick x-ray imaging procedure.

How long does it take to get the results of an x-ray?

It will typically take at least three days to have x-rays reviewed by a radiologist who will discuss their findings with Dr. Ishaaya. After they have conferred, you will be contacted about the results.

How do x-rays work?
X-ray imaging creates an image of your body’s internal structures of organs and bones. It works by emitting a minute amount of ionizing radiation that passes through your body. A special metallic film or imaging plate is exposed to the radiation, creating a picture of your body’s structures. The radiation mostly passes through the soft tissues and is absorbed by the heavier structures like bone and organs, making the white negative image.

Why are x-rays called x-rays?
In 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen discovered a previously unknown form of radiation able to pass through many different types of materials that absorb visible light. Because he didn’t know what it was, he dubbed it “x” radiation.
